Poem by Mike Hywel-Davies ( 2 of three verses )
‘Dawn in the Wahiba’
Morning eases pale across a fading sky
That silhouettes the shattered shrubs
Etched bone dry on sharp edged billow dunes
Scarce clutching life
Crisscrossed with furtive footsteps slow revealed
The moon shows white
Protesting coming day
The camels coat
Fast dry against the damp
As footprints blur to slipping drying grains.
Sun drives the breeze, rides rough across the dunes
Defeats the dawn cool pale pale bloodless grey
To wrench away
The moisture from the struggling plant
And dreams of night
Hide sheltered from the brazen gaze of day
A place where even shadows die at noon.
