Home » TeachersHow does the Offscreen Student Expedition apply to my classroom?
Using the pages in this section, we invite Secondary School teachers to take their students on an alternative journey to the Middle East.
With special focus on Art & Design, RE, Citizenship, Geography and ICT we have created a selection of downloadable resources which include Power Point documents and PDFs. In addition, the video and Flickr elements of this website make ideal content for use in assemblies and the classroom.
Resource Packs: as a result of this expedition, creative educational resource packs for teachers will be available from September 2007. To order your pack, please email resources@offscreened.com
Using the Offscreen Student Expedition in schools helps address these UK education initiatives and agenda:
Applying the experiences and materials from the Offscreen Student Expedition contributes to young people enjoying and achieving through the use of ICT and varied learning styles. The expedition allows young people to make a positive contribution by bringing the cultures and lives of Dubai and Oman into clearer focus. Finally, it provides virtual fieldwork, meaning that all pupils can take part in an overseas visit virtually from their classrooms, involving departments or schools who may find traditional off-site visits difficult.
Developing the Global Dimension (PDF)
With the opportunity for overseas fieldwork being a rarity for primary and secondary pupils, it is important to maximise the reach of that which does take place.
Using the Offscreen website and sharing the experiences of our nine pupil ambassadors means that the Global Dimension can be shared with all pupils. Useful sites for developing the global dimension in the classroom include:
Global Gateway– British Council site providing resources for school linking and global citizenship education
Global Dimension – Portal for teachers wanting to include the global dimension in the classroom
Citizenship Education: the global dimension – Site specific to Citizenship teachers
Association for Science Education: global dimension – Site specific to Science teachers
Geographical Association: global dimension – Site specific for Geography teachers
Ethnic Minority Achievement
The Offscreen Student Expedition includes those pupils from a Middle Eastern or Islamic background by providing relevant and content. Also, by using art and imagery as the main means of communication, pupils who have English as an Additional Language can still engage with and benefit from the expedition without a language barrier.
Key Stage 3: National Strategy: ICT Across the Curriculum
The Offscreen Student Expedition utilises many forms of ICT (digital media, Google Earth, GPS, blog, internet and satellite communications). These can be used both as a means of content delivery in a variety areas and an inspiration to develop pupil skills in these areas.
