GIRLS

Latifa

Age 17 from Latifa School for Girls, Dubai

I love cartoon animations, anime (Japanese cartoons), spending most of my time drawing and sketching my own characters and stories.

I love art; it has always been a way to express my feelings. I’ve always had problems with expressing myself verbally; I would usually sit down and take hours understanding myself. However with art, it would usually clear my mind. As I draw or paint, I can clearly see and understand my emotions from the painting I have made.

Similar reasons why I am very open to all kinds of music, because the music I listen to would be linked to the emotions I am experiencing. I listen to heavy metal, classic music, R’n'B, hip hop, pop and a lot more. English music isn’t the only thing I listen to, but also Arabic music, whether it’s the latest one or the oldest one. I have always liked to keep in touch with my heritage/culture, which is why I am very proud of who I am.

I would actually get to interact and involve myself with other people who have the same ideas and thoughts about art, but who live and have been brought up in different a country from my own. This is why I can not wait to show them around.

My interest in Art dates back to my years in primary school and even before that. I love painting, especially with oil paints, the sense of motion it has – a journey that never seems to end. I particularly find faces interesting, as I believe a human face tells a story. I always aim to send a message to the viewer through my art.

As an example, for this year’s A-Level course I am looking at Muslim Woman and how the ‘veil’ is often looked upon as oppression and a symbol of inequality. Through my art I am trying to show the true side of the ‘veil’, its true meaning and how I, as a Muslim woman feel when wearing it.

I am also an amateur photographer. I have started taking pictures seriously now for two years, and at the moment studying it as an AS. I found that photography made me see the world rather than look at it. I am mostly interested in macro shots when it comes to everyday pictures, looking down at my cup of hot chocolate or things under my feet as I walk. I usually
manipulate my pictures using Photoshop and at times merge them with my art pieces. I also write poetry and normally link a poem with most my pictures and art pieces. I am also interested in philosophy and life.

People from all over the world contact me to use my pictures in their websites or to display e.g the British Counsil for Eid celebrations. Another thing that I enjoy doing is drawing cartoons and doodle in my personal sketchbook. I am hoping to continue with my Art and perhaps exhibit my work in Dubai or even across the world.

I find this project interesting because we will be introducing our culture and traditions to students from the UK, same age as us, while at the same time share an art experience with one another. I feel that it is going to be a valuable experience for us all, a day we will not forget and cherish forever.

I love sports whether it’s playing them or watching them. I love playing basketball and football. I’m a huge football fan. I support Manchester united, I also like AC Milan and Real Madrid. I’m really interested in art and geography. I’ve always been into geography because I’ve found it very fascinating to learn about other places around the world, and I think that geography has influenced my art greatly over the last couple of months.

I’m really interested in this project because it’s an opportunity to meet other students from other places around the world and introduce them to our culture and heritage. It’s exciting to see their reactions and answer their questions about us and our traditions. I’d really like to hear the students’
thoughts and ideas and hopefully get influenced by them and get even more motivated and inspired towards my art work.

I have interest in arts along side with sciences. Art was and is my hobby for a long time however I didn’t really notice that until recently, as I didn’t really used to draw a lot when I was young. I started drawing when I was 12, before that I only used to draw cartoons. Besides drawing, I also enjoy reading Arabic books.

I find it interesting and a new experience for me to meet artists from the U.K. What interests me is that we are both from different countries of different cultures and thoughts. I hope we have a great time!

I like to take pictures of my journey and publish them on my webpage. Also I like to read teenage romance books. I like to draw random things that inspire me when I travel around.

I am interested in this project, because it will help me learn about other students from abroad and how they work to produce an outcome, in drawing sketches and analysing artist work. Also because it will help me in my photography course that I am taking now, which is about me and my learning environment. It will be interesting to see other students that come from a
different country with different culture in contrast to my learning environment.

At a very young age, art has always interested me. From cartoons to paintings, I have always felt attracted to the use of colour, composition, lines, shapes etc.

I find this project a chance for us, as representatives of the Arab Muslim world, to portray a better picture to those people who are unfamiliar with us. In this project we will speak a language, a language without words, but with colour and I hope through colour, we will create peace and love amongst us.

Khulood, nickname ” KoOks”

During the past few years I have attended a horse riding school which has become one of my favorite interests alongside art. It has allowed me to experience the beauty of the Arabian horse through observing these wonderful creatures. I am also very interested in the world of cars and racing and have produced several paintings under that subject.

I am interested in this project because it will allow me to show the students visiting what life is like for an art student in Dubai and where we look for inspiration. I am also hoping that it will show the students visiting how similar we can all be even if I come from an Arabic family and that we can have similar dreams and interests. I also think its amazing how people from different ends of the world can meet, communicate and understand each other and at the same time create Art!!

I have had a huge interest in art for a long time now I have been drawing all my life, my drawings range from ketchup bottles to nature.
My favourite type of art is drawing from life because I feel that’s what I am good at and also I don’t find it easy understanding abstract art. I feel I am a very artist person because I excel in my artistic interests like dancing, playing the piano and also languages.

I wish to carry on my work in art even after my A levels as I am applying to study architecture which I feel link my 2 favourite things art & maths. I also love photography I take my camera along with me everywhere even if it mean I have to carry 2 bags but I believe that if I don’t take it with me I’ll be really disappointed if I find something worth taking a picture of.

I am really happy that I will get the opportunity to share my interest with people from a different country and a different culture, I can’t wait to discuss my interests in “art” with someone my age with different views and understanding on the subject. I am really looking forward to spending the day with them and I know it’s going to be fun and memorable!

I have lots of different hobbies and they are falconry and horse riding. I live in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. My favourite place is the desert.

Mohammed

Age 17 from Rashid School for Boys, Dubai

I spend my time at the weekends with my friends. We go fishing and swimming in the beaches in Jumeirah. I play midfield for the school football team and really enjoy playing. I am very interested in fashion but I usually wear dishdash.

I am interests in this project because I like to sit with people who I don’t know. I like to tell people who I am and what I like.

Ghaith

Age 16 from Rashid School for Boys, Dubai

I enjoy horse riding, diving and skiing. I love to travel and try to visit a few new countries each year. I am interested in modern technology and it plays a key part in my everyday life. I wear our country’s traditional garment (the Khandora) but mainly wear jeans and a shirt. I love my country’s traditions lifestyle but sadly our old lifestyle is dying out and slowly vanishing.

This project is very appealing and interesting to me mainly because it will be a great chance for spreading our culture to other youths in different countries but also for me to see how different people view our cultures and traditions. I am sure it will be a very exciting and eye opening visit.

Mesfer

Age 16 from Rashid School for Boys, Dubai

I have my own quad bike and ride in the desert. I take my falcon into the desert for training everyday for hours. I also play football with my friends in our local sports club.

I am interested in this project because I think the students will be excited and I hope they have a happy experience.
