Political Genius

Today’s adventure took us on a journey to the House of Parliament where we had a chance to speak to a British MP. Before our outing we were asked to reflect on the role of politics in society and to write out if we felt that the role of politics was a positive one or not. Before leaving I had a clear view that politicians could play an extremely positive role in society. I had also decided that it was key that the public choose their politicians carefully and then once elected give them enough time and support to actually achieve their political goals. Once I got back from our trip however; I wasn’t as positive about politicians’ ability to change the world. The MP we spoke to today seemed to have very limited knowledge about foreign policy. In response to a question regarding her opinion about Palestinians and their desire to get their land back she said “I don’t know if this is true but someone told me the other day that there never was a land called Palestine”.. Really?! What? I just couldn’t believe it. The whole discussion went downhill from there. I understand that her constituency is very small, but any person working in politics should be well informed to the happenings of the world (they should at least know whether a country existed at some point or not), it was honestly really depressing.
I can’t wait to see what comes next.
