Today, we visted LIVE EAST magazine which is for the youth and by the youth. I love the idea of a youth magazine because young people have so much to say and this way their voices can be heard! We all had different tasks to chose from. Some students went out to interview people on the streets and other students focused on fashion and went out to photograph people that have interesting clothes on. The rest of the students compared their music taste and also created profiles on the LIVE EAST website or wrote opinion articles on topics they liked. I wrote an opinion article on an article in a newspaper and also made a profile on their website so I could send articles from Kuwait! After that, we went to BBC and talked to one of the journalists that is in charge of news in the Middle East. So many interesting questions were asked regarding political, cultural as well as religious issues. This whole day was was productive and I learned a lot about the media and the differences between a youth magazine and BBC. Can’t wait for Yorkshire tomorrow!

I’ve always had a pretty negative perception of western media organizations and the way they portray Arabs in their stories. It always felt like they cared more about the sponsors they had to please and agendas they had to conceal, but a man named Tarik has changed my mind. Mr. Tariq Kafala the Middle East Editor for BBC News Online spoke with the students today. I think after our meeting with the politician earlier this week the Offscreen students were feeling really excited about making yet another adult feel uncomfortable under the heavy fire of their very direct questions, only this time that didn’t happen. Unlike the politician, Mr. Kafala was very informed about the field of his chosen career; he spoke with such confidence and authority that even the most cynical man would believe (or in this case woman). Speaking to Mr. Kafala today made me realize that only ignorance and generalization had allowed me to assume that all western media sources are alike, in fact not all of them are so untrustworthy. I can’t believe I was demanding the media demonstrate traits I was not willing to demonstrate in myself. Today was excellent, its making me sad that we have to leave London tomorrow.
