Sept 2007 – March 2008
In collaboration with the British Museum
Offscreen Founder, Stephen Stapleton, worked for 5 months with 15 fantastic A Level photography students to create artwork for the global Adobe Youth Voices project. Inspired by the British Museum, students were asked to find and communicate individual stories and unofficial histories behind the collection. Students researched contemporary stories outside the monuments/statues or official records, to reveal secret histories of people. In the Islamic, African or North American galleries, students worked with curators, Venetia Porter, Chris Spring and Johnathan King, and chose stories which they found personally inspiring. Individual projects included:
Aladdin, a contemporary interpretation set on the streets of Tehran
Zimbabwe: the teachers story
Dubai: History Disappearing
The Two Battles of Wounded Knee
Bulletproof Loneliness: a child Soldiers story
Freerunning inspired by Arabic Calligraphy
City builders, the Secret life of the Mohawk Tribe
Windows of Miss communication
Portraits of my Muslim Family
The sessions following the Museum visit focussed on researching collage artists including Joseph Cornell, Peter Beard, Dan Eldon and Stephens own work and book, Offscreen, Four Young Artists in the Middle East. Students also accessed the Museums online resource, Explore, (which was introduced to them by Paul Clifford during the Museum visit), the BM library and curators in developing their ideas. A number of students have also interviewed their friends, families and peers to gain first hand information. Students experimented with the imagery and narratives they collected, using Adobe applications to bring their ideas to life.
At the end of the project, Crown Woods students joined their peers from Plashet, Dunraven and St Chaerles Schools (who had also taken part in the Adobe project in London) to celebrate the project at a special event at the British Museum.
Mr Allan Osborne, Assistant Headteacher and Head of Sixth Form at Crown Woods said of the event,
“In nine years of teaching, I have never been so proud and thrilled with what I saw last night. The sixth form students work that was exhibited at the British Museum was exceptional. The lectures the students gave about their work were mesmerising. The atmosphere was electric. I wanted to publicly thank you for your work on this project. It was encouraging to me to walk around the exhibition and see so many teachers for CWS , students looking so pleased with themselves and parents looking at the work in awe. It really proved that you are making a difference to young people lives. Truly remarkable.”
Thank you to Chloe, Lawrence, Jill, Paul, Chris, Aziz, Jamie, Richard, Mary, Lynne, Miguel, Godfried, Katie and countless others who supported this project.
