Lecture
23rd January 2008
On the 23rd January, the Royal Geographical Society was home to the Offscreen expedition team 2007. East London students from Newham and Barking were joined by Sheikh Khalfan Al Esry from Oman and Offscreen founder, Stephen Stapleton to give an inspiring and informative lecture about their experiences in the UAE and Oman.
The students and Sheikh received a standing ovation and plenty of laughs during a truly memorable night.
Sheikh Khalfan commented after the event, “You Guys and Gals were simply Wonderful. You took to the challenge and you actually impressed me. I salute you all for the tremendous and excellent achievement, both as part of Offscreened and the performers on the night. I have actually come to be sentimentally attached to you lot. I now talk about you all and the experience in many of my talks. I will add the invitation card to our web site soon.Have fun and I look forward to meeting you all in the near future.”
The day before flying to the World Economic Forum at Davos, Sheik Khalfan Al-Esry spoke about how perceptions of the Middle East and Islam are often distorted by the media. As one of the most progressive speakers and thinkers in the region, Khalfan surprised and inspired (in equal measure) the London audience with his kind hearted humor and insightful intelligence.
The brave students spoke of their street-level experiences working with their peers in the region, presenting an alternative portrait of a culture which touched them all deeply. Armed with the latest satellite communication technologies usually used by journalists, they showed how they reported back live from the front-line, sharing their experiences with over 20,000 students in the UK bringing the world to the classroom, they successfully pioneered a new frontier in peer-to-peer education. For a short time they lifted the audiences hopes for improved relations between the Arab and Islamic Worlds and the West.
A huge thanks to Sheikh Khalfan, Julson, Zahrar, Fahad, Samira, Radhika, Giovana, Lucy, Sam, Jamie, Barny, Chris, Anu, marjan, Olly, Ben, Ruairidh and all the iNOMAD team and Offscreen family for their support in making it all happen.
